Evaluation - Question 5

Evaluation - Question 4

Who would be the audience of your media product?

We have chosen to make a horror/thriller film for the reason as it can be targeted at a large group of people. Also, as horror is a popular genre it would draw people to watch our film if it were a blockbuster.

Making horror a popular genre choice for both males and females helps to target both genders of audience, rather than chick flicks targeted more of a female-based audience, and action /mystery films targeting more of male-based viewers.

Our main audience for our media product would be teenagers as this is the most common audience for other horror films. The main reason why horror movies, like ours, want to achieve a 15 age rating is because it means that they can get a broad audience as oppose to much a smaller, niche audience, in order to get a mass audience. If it were rating 18+, since teenagers are the prime audience for horror movies and seem to enjoy them the most out of all other age groups.
The rating of our film has been given a 15-age rating which means that the audience could be from any age of 15 and above. We decided to give the restriction to people younger than 15 not being able to watch the film because it isn’t suitable for them. By choosing a 15 rating this meant that we didn’t include any offensive language, behavior and the horror can be strong without being sexualized to something more. The reason we chose to use a 15 rating is because we felt that it gives us the chance to appeal to younger audience compared to other horror films such as ‘Scream’, which are rated 18+.

Our chosen demographic Is going to be E as it contains students and young people who are our main target audience. We feel like this demographic is most likely to enjoy to enjoy our film.

My film has been made so that it would appeal to both genders creating a wider audience to view the media product, due to the fact that out media product includes both male and female actors. Also, people tastes in media will affect their film consumption habits; so if they enjoy horror films, they may be more likely to watch our film.

As our media product is aimed at a young audience, we feel like it will be easier to advertise as young people are the main users of social media, so we could use that platform to spread the work of our film. We could advertise using social media websites such as twitter, Instagram, snapchat (how it was used for spectre) and Facebook. We could also put out film on youtube which can be easily accessed by anyone.

Location in Horror/Thriller (Research)

Saw is set in a limited surrounding so no sight of doors or window all suggest a feeling of claustrophobia and that is the main location because mainly the audience would be pondering on how the characters are going to escape.

Scream is set in a house in the kitchen, in the middle of nowhere surrounded by big trees, within an area where surroundings are bare and less people are there to witness the potential violence and torture, which happens to the character. Also the location of misery is similar to scream because you do not see any other houses within sight from where its set location which in this film may suggest that this character is lonely and keeps to himself. As well as Halloween starts setting the film in a messy kitchen suggestion that the characters are normal family and the film starts off as a equilibrium.

Also both Scream and Halloween are set in the kitchen, this being the place in house where and useable weapons are kept such as knives, where in scream knives are shown in the centre of the kitchen.

Costumes in Horror/Thriller (Research)

Ordinary, daily clothing is often used in horror films to create a sense of normality. For example in Scream, the character is wearing a polo neck and trousers. This is done to potray innocence within the character. Also, in Misery, the character also wore ordinary clothing. This shows that trouble or bad things come in the way of innocent people.

Rough and dirty clothing was used in saw portraying the thought of their social class and how less important the two characters are in terms of status, because they have been left in a abandon room with barley anything.

In creep your unable to see costume within the few first minutes because the images are being shown from a point of view angle. Which portrays that the audience have not got a sense of what type of person this character is because your able to tell a lot from what people what for example wealth and their culture.

In scream the look of wealth in terms of the materials of the clothing suggesting that the victim is portrayed to be better in term of money and class and stereotypically it is the upper class who do not see to cause trouble but however trouble seems to find them.

Gender Representation in Horror/Thriller (Research)

Gender is stereotypically presented. Women are presented through the media as objects, mainly emotionally orientated. Throughout the media they are presented to be more emotional compared to men, who are stereotypically seen as being emotionally and physically stronger.

Men are usually the heroes and tend to take on more active roles whereas women usually take on passive roles. Traditionally women are represented in horror films as the damsel in distress and are usually being attacked by the killer because they have committed a sinful act. Women are traditionally represented as the victims and men represented as the monster and hero. This was how women used to be treated before women had equal rights to men; so that was how they were portrayed in horror films.

Lighting in Horror/Thriller (Research)

I watched the opening sequences for several films as part of my Horror research.

In these two horror films the main sources of lighting that is used throughout the films is darkness and bright but sharp lighting.
Daylight was present within the two films, which showed that it started as any other ordinary day for the characters. This made the films seems realistic. This links to Todorovs narrative theory as this is the equilibrium, the disruption will occur soon after this.

Darkness was also used in Saw as it captures the fact that it will be a scary horror film.  Darkness connotes danger and evil. The dark mise en scene immediately shows the genre of the film to the audience.
Harsh fluorescent lighting was used in Saw. This allowed the audience wonder about what is happening. It also sets the scene in terms of how scary the film going to be, and the types of weapons in will contain. Weapons are another convention of horror
